Brooke Bolwerk of Appleton was recently announced as the winner of WISA’s annual Police Youth Scholarship Award. She will receive $1,500 for the scholarship to help her with college expenses as she enters Minnesota State-Mankato this fall.

A graduating student at Appleton North High School in 2021, Brooke is the daughter of Susan Bolwerk, Deputy Sheriff of Outagamie City. High School students who are the children of law enforcement or fire department personnel are eligible for a chance for the award. WISA awards $1,500 annually for both the police and fire scholarship awards. The program began in 2010
and has awarded $34,000 over the years.

With a 4.0 GPA (Grade Point Average), Brooke ranked number one in her graduating class of 448. She participated in volleyball and was a member of the Links Crew, National Honor Society, HOSA-Future Health Professionals and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Senior Leader). She was also nominated for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders.

Brooke plans to seek a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing at Minnesota State-Mankato, with a double major in Spanish, and a certificate in American Sign Language. She also plans to minor in psychology. During the check presentation, Brooke thanked the Sheriff’s Department, her mother and WISA for helping her achieve the award. Applicants were asked “What it means to me to have my parent/guardian involved in securing our community.” Brooke wrote in part of her essay for the contest:

“Because of the characteristics that my mother has modeled for me, I have developed into an individual with a passion for helping those around me, and giving back to my community. I will forever be grateful for everything she has taught me, and continue to live my life how she would. I am honored to witness the role my mother plays in protecting the community, and I am
even more grateful to experience how to go above and beyond one’s job description by making a difference in the life of everyone you meet.”

WISA is proud to support future leaders like Brooke in their pursuit of their higher education goals. For more on the WISA Youth Scholarship program, go to: https://www.wiesa.org/about/youth-scholarship-information/.
